Our Volunteers Love Art & Children

Almost all our volunteer needs require close contact with others, and because of Covid-19 recommendations and restrictions, we have not been able to offer volunteer opportunities. Breanna’s Gift feels the loss of our volunteers in all areas of our programming. Know that you are appreciated and very missed during these unprecedented times. We look forward to the time when we can be together again.

For after Covid-19:

Breanna’s Gift volunteer opportunities will be available for different areas of our organization. Teaching assistants work with our artist/teachers at afternoon classes held during the week at Ronald McDonald House Charities-Upper Midwest, Children’s Minnesota hospitals in St. Paul and Minneapolis and Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare. Administrative help with mailings, cataloging of donated goods, assembly of Art Takeout “classes in a box,” supply assembly for Art Take2 and helping with fundraising events is also greatly appreciated.

For more information about assisting with administrative work such as mailings or helping with event needs, contact Heather Christopherson at 612.730.6560 or heather@breannasgift.org

If you are an individual or group interested in volunteering with the preparation of Art Takeout projects, please contact Art Takeout Coordinator, Denise Crestik, denise.crestik@ParsonsCorp.com.

Teaching assistants help our artist/teachers as they work with children and their families. Volunteers assisting with classes have the opportunity to work one-on-one with children and they give teachers the flexibility to focus on overall presentation of projects or classes that include dance, music, visual arts and theater. To be a teaching assistant you must be at least 18 years old.

We are looking for people who have worked with children and who can be flexible, patient and have a gentle, nurturing style of interacting with people. A background in the arts would be helpful but is not required.

Training is required. Breanna’s Gift artist/teachers work with each volunteer before and during the classes so they are familiar with the projects being taught. This volunteer training is continuous as volunteers work with different artist/teachers from all art disciplines. A background check is required and training includes information about working with children and their families with regard to special needs and confidentiality.

The hospitals we work with require that all Breanna’s Gift staff participate in their volunteer training programs. Their protocols include:

  • Volunteer application
  • Background check
  • Health assessment to review current immunizations
  • Completing an on line training session

Our arts program is ongoing throughout the year. The time commitment varies according to each volunteer’s availability. A minimum of two classes (approximately 6 hours) a month would be requested. Our classes are currently taught on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons.
